On November 4th, during a moving ceremony, the AURA Observatory in Chile has announced that from this year onwards has been created the Annual Price called "Father Picetti Award”. Every year, this award will be given to recognize leaders in education and outreach in northern Chile for their outstanding performance and contributions on science’s teaching to the community, not only to young students but also to general public, thus encouraging new generations of astronomers and professional scientists in Chile.

The first version of this annual award logically was a tribute to who has inspired AURA to develop this whole initiative: the academic and professor Father Juan Bautista Picetti, due to its long career in science’s teaching in the region. Father Picetti was awarded with a commemorative plaque of recognition and also given a new telescope, Dobsonian 8 inch model, which will be used with students of the Seminario Conciliar.

The ceremony was attended by several authorities, including the President of AURA, Dr. William Smith; the Director of AURA in Chile, Dr. Christopher Smith, the Rector of the Seminario Conciliar Educational Foundation, Father Elson Rojas Lamas, Director of NOAO, Dr. David Silva, Director of Gemini South, Dr. Nancy Levenson, Former director of Cerro Tololo, Dr. Malcolm Smith, the NOAO Education and Outreach Department Manager, Mr. Steve Pompea. Also, it attended the Public Information and Outreach Officer of Gemini South, Ms. Antonieta Garcia; along with some former Father Picetti students: Dr. Roger Leyton, Guillermo Damke (by videoconference from USA) and Jorge Fernandez, who gave emotional testimonies about how Father Picetti has influenced in their lives, and in their professional training.

"During his work in the Seminario Conciliar Educational Foundation, as well as in his life, Father Picetti has inspired and trained several generations of new scientists and technical professionals and shared the wonders of the universe with many others. He has been a mainstay in the formation of several generations of young people that are now working on the scientific field, and has made great contributions in this area for Chile" expressed the Director of AURA in Chile, Dr. Christopher Smith.

Finally, in his speech, Father Picetti emphasized that “the main objective of our educational work, especially in the classroom and outside, was always to open the imaginative and creative world of our children into a friendly and full of hope dialogue with his own terrestrial and cosmic environment”
